Auto Sort USPS:
Outgoing letters are pre-sorted prior to sending to USPS, therefore, using lower rates to mail. This allows the Mail Service Center to obtain discounted rates due to a higher volume.
Courier:
Mail or packages sent from any Government Agency (State, County, City or Schools) with a courier number, in any county, being sent to another courier number, in a different county. Addresses will be 6 digit courier numbers except in Wake County which uses the Mail Service Center (MSC) number. Courier mail goes out at 7 pm and is delivered overnight. Mail being sent to MSC numbers from outlying counties will be processed and delivered to the MSC mailbox in the morning run.
Interoffice:
Mail going from one state agency to another only in Wake County. MSC Numbers will be used as the addresses. Mail is delivered twice daily, morning and afternoon. Mail is picked up to be processed (Interoffice, Courier USPS and UPS) and sent out each evening.
Other Mail Types:
The Mail Service Center currently ships through USPS and UPS but not FedEx. Please ensure your Mail Service Center form is properly filled out.
MSC Number:
The Mail Service Center Number is used to identify Wake County agencies by location for delivery and billing purposes. All MSC numbers have the zip code followed by the 4 digit MSC number. In case of a 6 digit MSC number, use the last 4 digits. (example: 20301 MSC, Raleigh NC is completed as 27699-0301)
Return to Sender:
This is used as a last resort when the Mail Service Center cannot locate the person or agency that the mail is addressed to. We use the State Government web site lisiting, the state operator and will call agencies to see if they can help us locate the agency or person to whom the mail is addressed.
UPS:
United Parcel Service can be used instead of USPS (United States Postal Service) for outgoing parcels.
USPS:
United States Postal Service is used for outgoing mail and packages being sent to addresses not affiliated with government.
