Scholarship Classes

Scholarships for Children of Certain Deceased, Disabled or POW/MIA Veterans
Provided Under Chapter 165, Article 4, General Statutes of North Carolina


Class I-A

  • Veteran parent killed or dies in wartime service or dies as a result of service-connected condition incurred in wartime service as defined in the law.
  • No limit on number awarded each year.
  • Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters) if used within 8 years.

Nature of scholarship:

  1. Tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in Public, Community & Technical Colleges/Institutions.
  2. $4,500 per nine-month academic year in Private Colleges & Junior Colleges.

Class I-B

  • Veteran parent rated by USDVA as 100% disabled due to wartime service as defined in the law, and currently or at time of death drawing compensation for such disability.
  • No limit on number awarded each year.
  • Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters) if used within 8 years.

Nature of scholarship:

  1. Tuition and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in Public, Community & Technical Colleges/Institutions.
  2. $1,500 per nine-month academic year in Private Colleges & Junior Colleges.

Class II
  • Veteran parent rated by USDVA as much as 20% but less than 100% disabled due to wartime service as defined in the law, or was awarded Purple Heart Medal for wounds received.
  • Up to 100 awarded per year.
  • Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters) if used within 8 years.

Nature of scholarship:

  1. Tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in Public, Community & Technical Colleges/Institutions.
  2. $4,500 per nine-month academic year in Private Colleges & Junior Colleges.

Class III

  • Veteran parent is or was at time of death drawing pension for total and permanent disability as rated by the USDVA, or
  • Veteran parent is a deceased war veteran who was honorably discharged and who does not qualify under any other provision within this synopsis, or
  • Veteran parent who served in a combat zone or waters adjacent to a combat zone and received a campaign badge or medal and who does not qualify under any other provision within this synopsis.
  • Up to 100 awarded per year.
  • Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters) if used within 8 years.

Nature of scholarship:

  1. Tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in Public, Community & Technical Colleges/Institutions.
  2. $4,500 per nine-month academic year in Private Colleges & Junior Colleges.

Class IV

  • Veteran parent was a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action.
  • No limit on number awarded per year.
  • Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters) if used within 8 years.

Nature of scholarship:

  1. Tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in Public, Community & Technical Colleges/Institutions.
  2. $4,500 per nine-month academic year in Private Colleges & Junior Colleges.

NOTE 2: Provision exempts books, computers, and supplies.
