They must be enrolled for the semester after the internship, have completed their high school diploma and their second year of a 4-year college/university or first year of a community college, and have a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Yes! Each applicant to the Internship Program can select up to 5 projects for which to apply.

Can I get academic credit for my internship?

When he or she needs a contact person for the internship, the contact may be either the Internship Coordinator or your supervisor.

I don't live near my preferred internship sites. Can you provide housing?

YAIO cannot provide housing for you; however, we can provide referrals to others who can assist you.

When will the summer project descriptions be available?

Project descriptions are usually posted on our website around late-October.

How long is the program? When is my first day of work?

The first day of work (including orientation) is typically the day after Memorial Day and the program lasts for 10 weeks, usually ending the first week of August. For more specific dates, view the project description book.

Do I need an official transcript? / I'm a law student, so transcripts won't be available until after the application deadline!

An unofficial or student copy of your transcript is acceptable. Law students can submit transcripts when they become available. Transcripts MUST include overall GPA.

The post office closed early / My printer wouldn't work / My dog ate my application. Can I send it in late?

Applications must be postmarked by the deadline. No late applications will be accepted. NO EXCEPTIONS.

I'm applying for 5 different projects. Do I need 5 different cover letters?

This is not required. However, if you wish to address each position in a separate letter, you are free to do so. Just be sure you also include a general cover letter with your original application, including a bulleted list of all the projects to which you are applying.

Are all the internships located in Raleigh?

No! There are internships west of Raleigh (including the mountains) and east (all the way to the beach!). You can look up internships by location in the project description book.

Yes. All application materials (application forms, cover letters, academic transcript, and resumes) should be mailed in one envelope to the YAIO office. It must be postmarked by the deadline date and all materials must be typed/computer printed.
