Accessing Non-Public Student Records (Private School)

Private Schools

The Division of Non-Public Education does not collect or maintain any student records—current or historical. Private school students who need school records, including high school transcripts, diplomas, attendance records, standardized test scores, or report cards, should contact the chief administrator of their private school. If the private school has closed, the NC Division of Non-Public Education (NCDNPE) may be able to assist. Private schools that cease operation are required to notify the NC DNPE and provide information about where their records will be stored. If the school fails to alert our office, our ability to assist may be limited.

Tips for Searching for Private School Records

  1. Contact the NC Division of Non-Public Education (NCDNPE) at 984-236-0113. If the school has notified our office about closure and record storage, we can assist.

If the school did not contact our office, here are other tips:

  1. If the school is associated with a church, consider contacting the church for records. There is a possibility that records are kept there, even if the church building changed ownership.
  2. Reach out to other private schools in the area, as arrangements may have been made for neighboring schools to house their records.
  3. Contact the local municipality offices for assistance.

Private school graduates who are unable to provide proof of graduation through the private school administrator may need to explore options for earning and receiving a Certificate of High School Equivalency or a similarly titled credential.
