Representing Wake County's District 40, John served in the state legislature for nearly 10 years and prior to that spent 25 years as a state judge serving in various capacities.
Flags were previously ordered to fly at half-staff for a period of 30 days beginning December 30 in honor of the nation's 39th U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, who passed away last month.
Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977-1981, and previously served as the 76th Governor of Georgia as well as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy.
Saturday will mark 83 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where more than 2,000 service members and civilians died on December 7, 1941.
