Governor Roy Cooper ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to remain lowered to half-staff through sunrise on Monday, May 18, 2020 in honor of Private First Class Tyler Knight Cox, who passed away during training on Wednesday, April 29, in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Stationed at Camp LeJeune, PFC Cox was assigned to a 3d Battalion 8th Marines as a 0311 rifleman.  Services for PFC Cox will be held on Saturday, May 16 in his hometown of Dike, Iowa.

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all US and North Carolina flags at state facilities be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, May 15, 2020 in observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day. This day recognizes the many men and women of law enforcement who lost their lives or who were injured in the line of duty. Statement from Governor Roy Cooper:

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning Friday, May 1, 2020 until sunset on Monday, May 4, 2020 in honor of former NC State Senator and Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand, who passed away on Friday. A native of Garner, North Carolina, Rand served more than 20 years in the NC Senate. As Senator he represented North Carolina's 19th District, and served as Chairman of the Rules Committee as well as a right-hand man for Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight.

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to remain lowered to half-staff until sunset Friday, April 3, 2020 in honor of State Highway Patrol Trooper Nolan J. Sanders who passed away while in the line of duty in Wayne County on Friday, March 27. Trooper Sanders joined the State Highway Patrol in 2015. Prior to this role, he served as a deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.  Governor Cooper released the following statement on Friday:

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning Saturday, March 28, 2020 until sunset Tuesday, March 31, 2020 in honor of NC House of Representative MaryAnn Black, who passed away this week. Black represented the 29th District of Durham County since 2017. She also served as a Durham County Commissioner from 1990 to 2002. A private service for Rep. Black was held on Friday. Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning Friday, March 20, 2020 in honor of the following fallen soldiers who were stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning Tuesday, March 10, 2020 in honor of Gunnery Sgt. Diego D. Pongo and Marine Corps Capt. Moises A. Navas. Sgt. Pongo and Capt. Navas died while accompanying Iraqi Security Forces in north central Iraq on Sunday. They were both assigned to the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, Marine Forces Special Operations Command at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In tribute, flags are to remain at halfstaff through sunset on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to remain at half-staff until sunset on Friday, February 21, 2020 in honor of NC House of Representative Linda Johnson, who passed away on Tuesday. A representative for Cabarrus County, Rep. Johnson served in the North Carolina's House of Representatives for more than a decade. Last year, she served as a senior appropriations chair. She was also co-chair of the joint education oversight committee.  Statement from Governor Roy Cooper:

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning Monday, February 17, 2020 until sunset on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 in honor of former North Carolina Lt. Governor Robert "Bob" Jordan, who passed away on Sunday.

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff beginning Monday, February 10, 2020 in honor of Sgt. Javier Jaguar Gutierrez, who lost his life during an attack in Afghanistan. Sgt. Gutierrez, who was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was stationed at Fort Bragg before his assignment to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. In tribute, flags are to remain at halfstaff through sunset on Sunday, February 16, 2020.
