NC State Building Commission

History of the Commission

The State Building Commission was established to direct and guide the State's capital facilities development and management program. The Commission selects designers, consultants & construction managers at risk for each State capital improvement project, ensuring those selected have the qualifications and experience necessary for the job.

About the Commission

The State Building Commission consists of nine members appointed to three-year terms:

  • A licensed architect nominated by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
  • A registered engineer nominated by the Consulting Engineers Council and the Professional Engineers of North Carolina
  • A licensed building contractor nominated by the Carolinas AGC (Associated General Contractors)
  • A licensed electrical contractor nominated by the North Carolina Association of Electrical Contractors and the Carolinas Electrical Contractors' Association
  • A public member appointed by the Governor.
  • A licensed mechanical contractor nominated by the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors of North Carolina, Inc.
  • A UNC system employee currently involved in the capital facilities development process, nominated by its Board of Governors
  • A public member who is knowledgeable in the building construction or building maintenance area, appointed by the General Assembly.
  • A representative of local government nominated by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners or the North Carolina League of Municipalities
