In conjunction with Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week, which kicked-off convenings in September to promote the awareness and development of minority and women-owned businesses in North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper signed a proclamation declaring October 2019 as Minority Enterprise Development Month (MED Month).

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, October 18, in honor of US Army Pvt. Andrew McLean. Pvt. McLean died while preparing for a physical training exercise on September 10. A native of Fayetteville, NC, Pvt. McLean was assigned to the 3rd Battalion 60th Infrantry Regiment Team in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Services for Pvt. McLean will be held at the Daniel Circle Chapel in Fort Jackson on Friday.  

Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state buildings, facilities and grounds to be lowered to half-staff immediately through sunset on Friday, October 18, in honor of US Representative Elijah E. Cummings. A veteran civil rights activist and congressman of Maryland's 7th District, Rep. Cummings passed away on Thursday, October 17.  A native of Baltimore, MD, Rep. Cummings served as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and was the first African American in history to be named Speaker Pro Tempore of Maryland.

Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, October 7 in honor of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day. In accordance to Public Law 107-51, flags are to be lowered annually in recognition of the many firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. 

Grants of up to $1,000 are available from the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission for nonprofit organizations and local government agencies wishing to create or strengthen programs that support the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme of this year’s 2019 grant program is “A Call for Civil Discourse,” a topic taught by Dr. King to encourage the engagement of conversation among citizens to further enhance understanding of one another.

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, September 30, in honor of US Army Sgt. 1st Class Elis A. "Barreto" Ortiz. Sgt. Barreto died while in combat in Afghanistan on Thursday, September 5.

The North Carolina Department of Administration Council for Women & Youth Involvement (CFWYI) is accepting mini grant applications through its State Youth Council program, beginning today. Youth Councils are active across the state, enabling students to enhance their communities while helping their peers. The annual mini grant program specifically targets youth, particularly high school students grades 9 - 12, giving Youth Council members an opportunity to help local peers establish leadership skills in project development, management and communication.

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, September 11, in tribute to Patriot Day, also known as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. This day honors the victims of the 9/11 tragedy, their families and the heroic sacrifices of first responders. Please join us as we remember the thousands of innocent lives lost during the most deadly attack on U.S. soil. 

Ahead of Women’s Equality Day on August 26, the NC Department of Administration (DOA) launched a new mentorship program on July 1, to address gender equity in North Carolina within the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The Lady Cardinal Mentorship Program, established by DOA Secretary Machelle Sanders, offers high school girls in North Carolina an opportunity to explore STEM-based careers within state government.

Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to remain at half-staff through sunset on August 13, in honor of US Army Specialist Michael Isaiah Nance, who died while in combat in southern Afghanistan. Spc. Nance was a member of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Services for Spc. Nance will be held in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday.
