Governor Roy Cooper declared May 5 as a Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, raising awareness on the disproportionate rate of American Indian and Alaska Native women who have disappeared from their homes and lost their lives due to acts of violence.

The NC Department of Administration’s State Youth Council and Youth Advisory Council recently awarded a total of $6,292 through the annual Mini Grant Program to 15 deserving North Carolina-based organizations. Each year, funding ranging from $100 to $500 is awarded to youth organizations to create peer-to-peer activities within their communities geared towards high schoolers. 

During the next three months, the NC Department of Administration is providing business and government leaders opportunities to join a virtual lunch and learn series that explore ways to enhance and develop diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within North Carolina’s public and private business sectors.

More than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the United States have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To raise awareness and continue educating North Carolinians on this prevalent issue, Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

In conjunction with Women’s History Month, the NC Department of Administration’s Council for Women & Youth Involvement will host a virtual panel discussion next week to address several key issues impacting North Carolina women.  

The NC Department of Administration’s Council for Women and Youth Involvement today released the 2022 Status of Women in North Carolina: Poverty and Opportunity Report. 

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half staff immediately until sunset Sunday, March 27, 2022, in honor of former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Korbel Albright who passed away on Wednesday, March 23. Nominated by President Bill Clinton, Albright was the first woman to serve as the U.S. secretary of state, a role in which she served from 1997 to 2001. Prior to this role, she served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997.

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half staff from sunrise to sunset Thursday, March 24, 2022, in honor of former North Carolina Senator Linda Garrou, who passed away on Saturday, March 19. Garrou, a Forsyth County Democrat, served in the state Senate for more than a decade before retiring in 2012. A top state government budget-writer, Garrou served as one of the co-chairs of the Senate Appropriations Committee for eight years.

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half staff from sunsrise Saturday, March 26 through sunset Monday, March 28, 2022, in honor of four Camp Lejeune based U.S. Marines who died during a training flight in Norway on March 18. The training was in support of Exercise Cold Response 2022. The fallen Marines are:

Governor Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half staff from sunrise to sunset Saturday, March 19, 2022, in honor of former North Carolina Senator William B. Miller Sr., who passed away on Monday, March 14. Miller served eight years as chairman of the Forsyth County Republican Party and as a senator for District 31 in 2006. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on March 19 at the Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
